Are we done yet?

When I started this whole adventure a wise friend predicted the following would happen:

1. At first it will be hard because it is so new
2. Then it will be hard because it is so old
3. Then you will wonder why you ever felt the way you did in #1 and #2.

So far she has turned out to be 100% correct. I'm now at #2 and I'm REALLY sick of eating food storage. We are still trying out new recipes everyday so that is at least interesting but it's so much work with so little pay off.

I really miss being too tired to make dinner and just grabbing a pizza. I miss all of our family's favorite recipes. I miss snack foods. I miss super yummy food. I miss feeling like a normal person. I think I even miss grocery shopping.

I keep reminding myself why I started this so I can endure to the end. I'm learning a LOT and I know that I haven't learned all of the things that I set out to learn yet. I know that I will keep going but I just needed to complain a little bit. I just have to make it past #2 and get to the part where it's just normal and I don't even think about it anymore. Any ideas on when that will be?

  1. Hi, I found you via a link on a friend's blog and I just thought I'd throw my two cents in! :) My husband was laid off 5 months ago so we have been eating plenty of food storage but the blessing has been that we really truly store what we eat. Sure we miss eating out occationally and "quick" convenience foods. But overall It is not too big of an ajustment and now I really have a testimony of my own that we should store what we eat!
I say keep trying to find recipes you like, just filling your stomach is no fun!
Thanks for blogging all this it is great!

    1. I wish I could store what we eat so it won't be a huge change in diet. We usually have grilled steak or chicken with salad and a fresh veggie for dinner and salad with sliced meat on top for lunch. We usually only have coffee for breakfast exept on Sunday when we have fried eggs and bacon.

My hubby won't eat canned food only fresh.
I keep telllng him that if TEOTWAWKI happens he's going to stave.

I at least can eat beans and rice, he's using his diabetes as an excuse not to even try some food storage meals. He thinks that when the time comes he will be willing to eat whatever he has to to stay alive. I try to convince him that is not the time to experiment.

I'm going to make him read this blog and see if it won't change his mind.

      Keep up the good work.

  2. We need you. I hope that helps your determination. However, pray about it and see if you can shorten it to 3 months or 6 months. You have certainly shown us how hard it will be to suddenly have to be a pioneer and cook and bake things that you never had to even think about before, like hamburger buns! Or take a break, reconnoiter, and start again when you have put in some things you wish you had before!

  3. Hang in there! It does really get old and it's so hard to go without convenience foods when they still exist. Pioneer days with no convenience options would at least eliminate the desire to turn to them. I've found that as I've cut back on eating out and grocery shopping, they aren't very enjoyable when I do them. I'm overwhelmed by the amount of food (especially unnecessary convenience food) in the stores, and the prices of eating out almost make me ill.

You can do this! You've done a fantastic job so far!

  4. It's me again! I'm not sure where you live, but if you're anywhere in the Salt Lake area, maybe we could get together for a little motivation. Try some new recipes together, do some freezer cooking using food storage so you won't have to cook every night, can some dried beans so you don't have to cook dried beans every time. ditto underscore girl at hotmail dot com

  5. Cherish,

Can't tell you how fun that would be! But, I live in California. I tried to get someone out here to do this with me but, understandably, no one wanted to. :)

I'm sure I'll get past this bump but you are right, the hardest part is that there is still convenience foods available. I did find a great new book though that is helpful. Gonna blog about it next. :)
