REAL Cream of Wheat

Have you ever made homemade cream of wheat?  It does not even resemble the stuff you buy in the box and it is YUMMY, and so good for you.  I made some this week and took pictures in case you have not tried it. 

First you need to grind the wheat very coarsely.  My electric wheat grinder can't do coarse enough.  My hand grinder can but it's too big of a pain to drag out so I use this handy little coffee grinder.  (You can also use a blender with the pulse setting.)

Just put a handful of wheat in there and grind it until it looks roughly like this:




I actually usually don't do it quite this fine because I like the larger pieces in my cereal. They kind of pop in your mouth when you are eating them and they are SO good! Anyway, once you grind your wheat, bring about 1 cup of milk and a pinch of salt almost to a boil on the stove and then add 1/2 cup of your ground wheat. Whisk it to prevent lumps.




Cook over low heat 10-20 minutes depending on how fine you have ground your wheat.  Use the longer time for more coarse wheat.  You also may need to add more milk to get the desired thickness.  Continue to stir ocassionally.  When the cereal is cooked add a half a tsp of vanilla and brown sugar if you want - I definitely do!

One of my favorite breakfasts on a cold morning, and it is really good for you (minus the brown sugar maybe  :)

Also, I found Ghee on sale at Costco this month!  If you don't know what that is, it's clarified butter.  Keeps for 6-12 months and does not need to be refrigerated.  I bought a Costco sized bottle for just $15 which is a screamin good deal for Ghee.


The guy at checkout was fairly dubious I knew what to do with this.  He said, "Do you know what this is?"  I promised him I did.  He was not convinced and said, looking at my lilly white skin "You know Indians are the ones who use this."  HaHa!

 Anyway, if you've never used Ghee it does taste like butter but has a more grainy texture.  It will become hard if you put it in the fridge but on the counter stays at a more liquid state.  It does melt normally on toast and stuff but definitely takes some getting used to.  Believe me, if it's all you had, you would LOVE it.  However, it does need to be rotated regularly with such a short shelf life so if your family doesn't like it enough to use it now it might not work for you.

Also, if you live near a WinCo - ours began carrying Gamma lids a short while ago and they are just $6.49!  That is a great price and I love these screw on lids for 5 gallon buckets.  It's so much easier to get in and out of my buckets and keep things rotated.  I did notice that Emergency Essentials also has them on sale right now if you need some and don't have a WinCo.

  1. I can't wait to try that cream of wheat! I'm the only one in the family who eats the box you buy from the store (and I like it, mostly because I grew up eating it) but I bet I'll get them to try it like this!

  2. I'm more of a Malt-o-Meal kind of gal, but it sure sounds good. I also love to flake my wheat and then cook it up. Awesome! :) Do you go to the Winco on Sheldon? Where are those lids? I don't recall ever seeing them.

  3. Yep that is my WinCo. They just started carrying them a few weeks ago. They are in the back next to the bulk spices. They also have 5 gallon water containers, and spigots that you can attach so you can create a "faucet" on your water container.

  4. Hi! I just discovered your blog this evening. In fact, I came in on the June, 2010, wheat meat issue. I left a lengthy comment there, but don't know if it would notify you as it is archived. (I fear I am not too computer savvy.)
    Since posting that comment I have gone back and read your entire blog and have really enjoyed your journey. I'm looking forward to following your future posts.
    I am happy you enjoyed "A Bite of Independence". We had a lot of fun writing it. It was one of the happiest times of my life. I am flabbergasted at how much is being asked for it on line!

    Just found both of your comments. It is SO great to "meet" you! I can't tell you how much that book helped me through my experience.

    I now teach classes on food storage and I always talk about that book but it is very hard for people to find.

    It is my dream to one day live on a piece of land where I can truly practice self sufficiency and your book will be the one must have when I get there!

  6. I made my own Ghee when I found butter for a buck a pound at our local grocery (I KNOW! I bought all they had on the shelf!) Ghee will keep indefinitely in the refrigerator. We used it for cooking for over two years.

  7. It's great idea to make a real cream of wheat. I have never made the cream by wheat. I think this info can help to prepare cream by wheat and I don't know what could be the taste of it, though I wanna try once how it could be. Thanks for giving such a nice procedure for making cream of wheat.

  11. Wow I had to try the wheat in my cereal after I saw this. and it was delicious, In fact I liked it so much I started eating it every morning for breakfast.   12. Love gamma lids for the buckets! As for Ghee, it has a higher heat ploint once clarified and can set l your counter without worry of spoilage. I llkve that stuff and use it a lot. I do make it and can it..was spring cleaning the pantry and rotating found a jar out of place that was 6 years old and as good as when originally canned... Normally I like to follow a 5 year limit but don't trust the NEW LIDS. LOVE YOUR BLOG...THANK YOU FOR sharing!

  14. WOW!!! Thanks for the great tip to use the coffee grinder!! I don't always get mine the texture I really want with my wheat grinder.
    Most people cook it in milk, but I like it in filtered water and add just a small amount of cold, cold milk around the edges to dip into as I eat it. YUMMMMM
